2019 AHEC SCHOLARS
Applications being accepted now through September 20, 2019.
Accepted Scholars will be notified by September 30th and the program will begin on
October 1, 2019.
The AHEC Scholars Program is designed to enhance the education and training of current health professions students committed to serving Alabama’s rural and underserved populations.
AHEC Scholars will be selected for a two-year commitment from among a variety of health professions: medicine, dentistry, nursing, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, public health, social work and more.

This program will focus on developmental biology as it pertains to the disease of addiction. This will require some knowledge of brain maturation and the effects of early use of drugs and alcohol on this process. An understanding of the contribution of external factors such as family of origin, genetics and trauma is important to appreciate causation.
Review current trends in drug use nationally in adolescents.
Discuss the multiple critical periods of brain development during childhood.
Describe the vulnerability of adolescents to the disease of addiction.
Identify intervention and treatment options.
