Southeast Alabama AHEC Scholars Inaugural Class

On November 1, 2018, twenty-two health professions students in the Southeast Alabama service area begin the classroom portion of our newest core program: AHEC Scholars. The program offers a multi-discipline experience for students on two levels: online classroom and clinical training with at least one other health-care discipline. Nursing students may train alongside pharmacy students and medical students can engage with social work students. The goal is to graduate career-ready students with experience in a team-based or a patient-centered care approach.

Participants from 6 regional universities and colleges will participate: Alabama State University, Auburn University, Auburn University Montgomery, Huntingdon College, Troy University, South University, and Southern Union Community College. The students represent study in 6 disciplines: Exercise Science, Medicine, Nursing, Nutrition, Pharmacy, and Social Work.

The two-year program features three modules each year: Interprofessional Education, Behavioral Health, and Social Determinants of Health in Year One. And, Cultural Competency, Emerging Health Issues, and Practice Transformation in Year Two.

Participants, who complete the 40 hours of online classroom and 40 hours of clinical training each year, receive a $500 stipend, paid registration and mileage reimbursement for participation in the Alabama Rural Health Association Conference along with exposure to cutting-edge curriculum designed by the University of Alabama Birmingham educators.
